Pinned and Tried: Coconut Oil Makeup Remover

Welcome to the first instalment of a series I'm calling "Pinned and Tried".

Each week I am going to use Pinterest as inspiration for beauty techniques, tricks, recipes, hacks, etc. There are a ton of DIY beauty ideas that have piqued my interest and I'm sure most of you share my curiosity to see if they actually work.

I found this pin a few days ago and was eager to give it a try. I may have chosen the easiest pin to mimic as it doesn't require any mixing, melting, combining or jarring. It's so simple and uses only one ingredient. That's right, just one ingredient - coconut oil. The trick - use it as an eye makeup remover.

Coconut oil can be found at any grocery or health foods store and is fairly inexpensive.

To start, rub a tiny amount in-between your fingers and it will slowly begin to melt. Close your eyes and then gently...I repeat...gently, massage it in. Be careful not to get any in your eyes. If you wear contacts I would recommend taking them out before you attempt this. I had a little incident when some of the oil smudged on one of my lenses, creating a blurred effect. My left eye turned into a kaleidoscope!

Our eyes are also very delicate so avoid pulling and tugging at them. Otherwise, you can actually cause wrinkles in the future.

After about a minute of rubbing, you'll look like a greasy racoon. Take a damp cotton pad and use it to wipe the oil from your eyes. It should wipe clean and remove the majority of your makeup.

Lately I've been experimenting with the Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Push-Up Liner, which is a super waterproof gel liner pen. The cosmetics company recently released the They're Real! Remover, specially formulated to remove the tough eye liner. The coconut oil seemed to do the trick as well. I had a little bit of eyeliner remaining on my lower lash line, but I tend to use a 3-1 cleanser after I remove my makeup anyways, to ensure everything is cleaned from my skin.

I'm happy with the end result. The coconut oil works better than many makeup removers I've tried. It's a good money-saving tip as well!

Ps. thumbs up for the no-makeup selfie?

A Magical Lipliner - No Sharpener Required

I rarely escape a drugstore without adopting a new beauty product. It's kind of like visiting your local animal shelter and falling in love with that puppy in the window. It's so irresistible and before you know it, you're buying a cage and carrying that cutie home with you. But instead of a furry friend, I now have a drawer full of lipstick and eyeshadows. Or as my Dad would say, "paint by number supplies".

OK it's not that bad. Now I just sound crazy...

I consider it a hobby and while my bank account cries out for help, sometimes I find gems like this and it suddenly becomes justifiable.

I was browsing the aisles the other day and stumbled upon a new display for the Annabelle Stay Sharp Self Sharpening Waterproof Lipliner. I've had my eye on the Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liners, but at $23 each I just haven't bit the bullet. So when I saw these "puppies" were selling for a fraction of the price, I just HAD to pick one up. I was curious to see how this drugstore version performed. I chose the colour Berry - a deep, wine/burgundy shade.

I love the concept of this lip liner! There is a teeny, tiny sharpener in the top of the pencil's cap. With each twist of the lid, the liner is shaped into a point to ensure perfect application every time. There's no need to worry about spilling little pencil shavings all over the place.

It's also seriously waterproof! Be careful of smudging, because you'll need a makeup remover to get it off. Mine lasted about four hours, even after eating breakfast and sipping on a couple of teas.

While I haven't had the chance to try the Smashbox version yet, I have a feeling this is going to be a great drugstore dupe. It's got good colour pay off and is a perfect pairing to layer under my Mac Lipstick in Dark Side

GlamGlow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Review

Oh GlamGlow - how I love you so!

I read somewhere that Nina Dobrev swore by this mask. So naturally I had to go out and make the purchase. The Vampire Diaries actress is absolutely stunning and if it's good enough for her, it's got to be good enough for me.

I should probably warn you - this product is not cheap! A full-size pot (1.7 oz) costs $76. But a little goes a long way. I wasn't sure if I would like it initially, so I opted for the smaller (0.5 oz) size at $21. I've now used this four times and have at least one use left. If you break it down, each application costs roughly $4.20 - relatively similar to some of the one-time use face masks you can find at the drug store.

There are some awesome all-natural ingredients in this mask including french sea clay, volcanic pumice rock, chamomile, lavender and green tea leaves. It smells pretty divine too!

I swipe a thin layer of this green concoction on my face and let it dry for 10 minutes. By that time, it has tingled and tightened so much that my cheek bones refuse to budge and my lips are glued shut. I splash a bit of warm water on my face and create gentle circular motions using my fingers. The micro volcanic rock exfoliate my skin while it washes off.

I learned a little while ago that if you have sensitive skin (like I do), exfoliating too much causes irritation and can actually lead to breakouts. The GlamGlow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment mask is a little abrasive, so I usually only use it once a week.

There's a noticeable difference with the appearance of my skin. Immediately after, my face feels tighter, but not dry. There's no need to smear on a ton of moisturizer. It's also brighter and super soft!

I've always tried not to touch my face because the dirt and oils on my fingers may cause a blemish to pop up. But I can't help myself! My hand is a magnet to my face. I love how amazing my skin feels.

While I may not have wrinkles...(yet)...I consider myself proactive. Since GlamGlow claims this product is anti-aging and provides anti-wrinkle results, it's perfect for someone my age. But the french sea clay used in this mask can also help to eliminate fine lines. Therefore making it the perfect option for women...and men...of all ages.

Overall, I think this product is worth the splurge.

Green Smoke - Fall Inspired Makeup

Let's be honest - this summer was a total bust. I'm over it! I'm disappointed and I just want to move on. But the good news is Fall is here! Pumpkin Spice Lattes, apple picking, scarves, boots and movies by the fire. It doesn't get much better.

In the spirit of the new season, I was inspired to create this dark, smokey eye look. Using deep greens and warm browns, I am reminded of the leaves that will soon flutter to the ground.

For this look I used the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette.

Listed in order of use for this look:
1. Gilded Ganache, 2. Triple Fudge, 3. Milk Chocolate, 4. White Chocolate

Gilded Ganache is really beautiful. It's a deep, olive-y green with golden shimmer and perfect for those of us with hazel eyes. This palette also smells amazing! Each shadow is made using real cocoa powder. To me it smells a little like powdered sugar. One whiff and suddenly I'm floating on a cotton candy cloud, above sugar cane jungles and bubble gum mountains.

I would probably try to eat it. But the makeup addict in me has decided that the colours are too pretty to ruin.

First I applied Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in Light 100 using a foundation blush and gently pressed the product into my skin.

I concealed my under eye circles and blemishes using Maybelline Instant Age Rewind (R) Eraser Dark Circles Concealer + Treatment in Light 120 and patted the product using my fingertips.

Before I started to work on my green smokey eye, I applied a small amount of Lorac Pro Behind The Scenes Eye Primer on my lids and under my bottom lashes to ensure the colours stay put all day long. I used a flat shader brush to pack Gilded Ganach all over my eyelids. I also used a pencil brush to smudge this colour onto my lower lash line.

I used L'Oreal Color Infaillible in Permanent Kaki and focused this on the centre part of my eyelid to add extra sparkle.

I used Triple Fudge, a deep matte brown colour, in my crease and focused it on the outer corners. A little bit above that I blended Milk Chocolate to create a gradient effect and smooth out any harsh lines. To highlight underneath my brow bone, I used my finger to lightly dab some of White Chocolate, a matte beige colour.

I used my NYX Eyeliner Pencil in Black to tightline my upper and lower waterlines. I also smudged a thin layer of this onto my upper lash line. I applied a thick coat of Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara to ensure my lashes didn't get lost among the dark colours.

Whenever I wear a smokey eye, I always make sure to use bronzer. Otherwise, the dark colours really wash out my face and can make me look like a zombie. I applied Benefit Hoola Bronzer onto the contours of my cheeks, along my hair line and chin.

Nars Blush in Orgasm was the perfect pairing for this look. It's a a peachy pink with subtle shimmer and provides the slightest flush. It's not overpowering considering there's so much going on with my eyes.

I highlighted the tops of my cheekbones, bridge of my nose and cupid's bow using The Body Shop Radiant Highlighter. Finally I topped the look off with Mac Lipstick in Angel.

I really liked the way everything turned out and I know this will be my go-to glam look during Fall.

Hydration's Best!

Water is my secret weapon for a lot of things. Some days I'm like a fish and I just can't get enough. Unfortunately that means I'm running to the washroom every 20 minutes. But besides the fact...I have found many benefits of drinking H20 and staying hydrated:

1. Immune System Boost

I swear that since I fell madly and deeply in love with water, I have never felt healthier. My immune system has been kicking some serious butt and I can't remember the last time I had a cold. However, if I do happen to come down with something, my theory is - DRINK MORE WATER! I will seriously chug bottles on bottles of water in an effort to flush the virus out of my system.

2. De-Bloating

Water is also known to help control calorie intake. While it doesn't actually help you lose weight, it is a great substitution for sugar-high drinks like pop and juice. Something I always found interesting as well, is that water helps de-bloat. We might think the opposite, but the more water we drink, the more we are flushing our systems and regulating ourselves. Hurray for bowel movements!

3. Beautiful Skin

Perhaps water's best kept secret is that it can make your skin look fantastic! Sorry guys, it won't prevent wrinkles from forming, but it will prevent flakes and dry spots. It can also brighten complexions and help achieve that natural glow we're all aiming for.

I also notice that my lips suffer if I don't drink enough water. The minute my lips start to get dry, I know I need to up my water intake. I can't rely solely on lip balm to save my kisser. I'm a huge lipstick fan, and there is nothing worse than having a colour settle into cracks, flake and dry my lips out even more.

Since I'm always drinking water, the bottle I use is just as important.

Devon recently gave me this water bottle from S'well. I've quickly fallen in love with this pink beauty. Oh my gosh it's so pink! These water bottles can keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot for 12. Even for the duration of a hot yoga class, the insides remain ice cold. They're non-leaching, toxin-free and made of double-walled stainless steel to prevent condensation. They're perfect for tossing into a purse without worrying about getting everything else wet.

They come in an array of great colours and textures. My water bottle is in a "Satin Finish" so the outside is quite smooth and the website calls this colour Bikini Pink. How friggen cute?! I was so in love with this sleek and chic water bottle that I felt Dev needed to have one too. His is a "Stone Finish" in a lime green colour the website calls Peridot.

These are on the pricier side, we got ours from Chapters.Indigo.ca for $37.00. But I honestly believe they are worth every penny! I kind of want one in every colour and finish.

There's a line in the movie Coyote Ugly where the girls yell "HELL NO H20" as they spray everyone in the room.

Well I've come up with a new line:

 "HELL YES HYDRATION'S BEST!"

Super corny I know...but hey, it works. Remember it and drink up!

Superhero Nails

Metallic is not normally my thing. I generally prefer a creme or matte finish. But since painting my nails with Racy by Sephora Formula X, I have not been able to stop gushing over it. There is something so intriguing about this colour. Is it silver? Is it purple? Is it green? The answer - all of the above. Technically it's a chrome finish. Sephora defines it as "ultrametallic". There's a slight iridescence to this polish and every time I catch a glimpse of my tips, it seems as though the colour has changed.

Formula X Polish in Racy

I have a confession! This colour makes me feel... like a bad-ass chick! Yep, I said it!

Maybe it's the fact that my nails have grown to an absurd length, but there's something about this paint job that feels a little devilish. At first I felt like a female villain in from the fairytales we're all familiar with: The Evil Queen who battles with Snow White to sustain her beauty as the fairest of them all. Or Maleficent, Disney's most iconic villain recently portrayed by Angelina Jolie on the big screen. But after giving it some thought, this colour is definitely a little more Catwoman. I mean, look at this photo of Halle Berry - and can we take a moment to appreciate how beautiful she is?

This nail polish borderlines good and evil, villain and hero. With an initial glimpse of the metal-like coat, the words "mirror, mirror" come to mind. But with a simple tilt of my hand, the sweet lavender tint reminds me to come back to my innocence.

Racy in natural sun light

I cannot express my love for these Sephora Formula X polish enough! For the past few weeks I have not been wearing topcoat. My last bottle dried up and with an early onset of Alzheimer's (self-diagnosed) I keep forgetting to buy a new one. Unfortunately, this means my DIY manicure chips faster than a woodpecker can peck a hole in a tree.

Not with Racy! I have now been wearing this polish for 6 days and it has only just begun chipping. Seriously - this is damn good stuff! It applies nicely and is opaque after just one coat.

Colour + formula = BIG WIN for me!

About Me

Hi! I'm Kelly (or Birdy, as my boyfriend has nicknamed me). Welcome to my little nest on the Internet and thanks for stopping by! I launched Beauty by Birdy in September of 2014 as an outlet to combine two passions: writing and lipstick. Since then, my blog has become a favourite hobby, although I do enjoy occasionally binge watching a series on Netflix (Stranger Things, Nashville, Jessica Jones, and more). While my posts primarily feature product reviews, makeup looks or beauty tips, I sometimes dabble in DIYs and share easy, healthy recipe ideas.

A little more about me? I love rocking a bold lip, green nail polish and taking long hot baths while watching too many YouTube videos. I enjoy sweaty hikes when the weather is sweet and paddling on calm water next to my best friend and boyfriend, Dev, in our (matching) kayaks. Chocolate is my weakness. Sushi is also my weakness. I'm a big fan of red wine and have been known to try strange foods or ingredient combinations.

Two and a half years later and I love blogging even more than when I anxiously hit publish on my very first post. I am constantly learning and have enjoyed interacting with readers and connecting with other beauty bloggers. I can't wait to see what the next couple of years have in store!

Feel free to reach out to me at any time: beautybybirdy1@gmail.com
