Mind Your Manners - Perfume Etiquette 101

Ok guys, we're going to finish off #FragranceWeek with a little lesson in perfume etiquette.

Chances are, you've walked passed someone who straight up stinks. Not in a bad way, but more in an overwhelming, obnoxious, old-lady perfume way. The smell lingers in your nose, taking your breath away until you're left waiting for the next gap of fresh air to ingest. It can be really unpleasant, especially for those with allergies. Here are some tips to make sure you're not caught guilty of the same crime:

Go Light - Perfume is very different from a body spray. Avoid getting too 'spritz-happy'. A small amount will go a long way. To get the most out of your fragrance, apply to pulse points like your wrists. Behind the ears is also a great spot, especially if you'll be doing any hugging or 'canoodling'. Those who are lucky enough to get a whiff will be pleasantly surprised. If you think the scent fades throughout the day, rollerballs and sample sizes are perfect to stick in your purse for touch ups, just be careful not to overdo it.

Chemistry Check - I've mentioned this before - what smells good on one person may smell awful on another. A fragrance changes slightly when mixed with our body odour. I strongly suggest spraying a small amount of perfume on your skin in a store, and going for a walk to get an idea of how it will alter on your skin, before making the purchase.

Toss It - Like most beauty products, perfumes expire. You'll probably notice when the scent changes, and when it does, make sure you throw it out. Ain't nobody got time for foul smelling fragrances!

Apply Alone - It's best to spray your perfume in an empty room. Many of us probably do so in our bedrooms before leaving the house for work every morning. However, if you do tend to touch up half-way through the day, making sure to find a private place like the bathroom. It can take a while for perfume to sink into the skin. The initial spray can be quite strong and intoxicating, especially for the noses of strangers or co-workers.

That's it, that's all! Just a few simple steps to avoid killing others with your scent.

I hope you enjoyed #FragranceWeek. I know I had fun writing each post! Let me know what you thought and if you'd like to see a similar series like the one again.

Sweet and Sexy: Dior Hypnotic Poison

With a name like Hypnotic Poison and a bottle in the shape of an apple, it's hard not to compare this perfume to the story of Snow White. It's beautiful, sweet, and feminine - just like the Disney princess. However, it's not totally innocent. There's a dark, spicy, unpredictable edge to it that reminds me of something the Evil Queen would wear. It's literally a fairy tale in a bottle, with the best of both sides and a balance between naughty and nice.

I like to wear this during the winter, because it is a warmer scent. The notes include caraway spice, cinnamon, vanilla, musk, and bitter almond. I've heard it described as smelling similar to root beer.

It's a great evening perfume - especially for date night - because of it's enchanting, mysterious and sexy qualities. It's truly intoxicating, in the best way possible. And it's unique. You'll never find a scent quite like this one.

Hypnotic Poison satisfies my obsession with vanilla, but combines that 'little bit of something extra' to intrigue my senses. It has quickly climbed to the top of my most loved fragrances.

Favourite Body Wash - LUSH It's Raining Men

The LUSH It's Raining Men Shower Gel smells so good, I could drink it! Or eat it...

Either way, it's amazing and I could not imagine #FragranceWeek without including this baby. It's the same scent as their Honey I Washed The Kids Soap, another favourite of mine. It's a mixture of caramel and honey, with a hint of orange. Fun fact: honey is not only super hydrating and soothing for dry or sensitive skin, it also has antioxidants to repair and protect against environmental damage.

It lathers really well, so a little goes a long way. While the scent doesn't last an incredibly long time on the skin, I find it does linger longer than other products I've tried. A few hours after a shower, my skin smells subtly sweet and delicious.

I recently purchased a solid shampoo bar in the same scent, solely because I wanted my hair to smell like toffee. I'll keep you posted on my opinion of the product as a whole.

Biggest Regret - DKNY Be Delicious & Be Delicious Fresh Blossom Perfumes

As you can tell from the title, today's #FragranceWeek post is focused on a regretful purchase. I really don't ever want to be a 'Debby Downer' on this blog, but I think it's important to share opinions and speak truthfully.

This brand has a ton of positive reviews, so naturally I thought I would like it too. Wrong! The DKNY Be Delicious and Be Delicious Fresh Blossom perfumes are simply too strong for me. I've tried spraying the tiniest amount and they still overwhelm my senses, even causing me to choke or have sneeze attacks. I avoid wearing these to work because I am afraid of offending my co-workers or triggering an allergic reaction.

Be Delicious combines apple, cucumber, rose, violet and sandalwood for a fresh and unique scent. Be Delicious Fresh Blossom, the sister of the original, is composed of grapefruit, rose and jasmine. I'm also not the biggest floral lover, which is probably another reason I didn't fall in love with these perfumes, like many others have.

Once again, this is just my personal preference and opinion. What I like, others may not and what some say smells good, I may think otherwise. It really differs for everyone.

On a positive note, the packaging itself is absolutely adorable! I'm just glad I picked up these smaller bottles in a set, rather than purchasing full-sizes because the contents inside disappointed me.

Best Smelling Lotion - The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter

Was anyone else obsessed with The Body Shop Satsuma Lip Balm when they were younger? I went though countless pots of the shimmering, zesty product in high school. But now I've moved on and fallen in love with their award-winning Body Butter.

First - I love the bright, citrus scent. Second - it lingers on the skin for a really long time. Sometimes it even absorbs into my clothing. Therefore, if you find yourself digging through your dirty laundry more often than not, The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter may be your saving grace for keeping your shirts smelling fresh. No need to be shy here, we're all guilty of committing this crime at one point or another.

Much like the Aquolina Pink Sugar perfume I discussed a couple of days ago, the Satsuma scent is very unique and distinct. It's quite strong and can be identified easily. It's unlike any other orange infused product I've ever tried.

I'm a really big advocate for the entire line of Body Butters and have tried numerous different scents. Created using Community Fair Trade shea butter, they're fast absorbing and keep the skin hydrated for hours. But hands down, Satsuma is my favourite.

Summer Favourite - LAVANILA Vanilla Coconut

With summer quickly approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss an amazing scent for the season during #FragranceWeek. The LAVANILA Vanilla Coconut Eau de Parfum Spray is absolutely divine and has become a more recent favourite of mine. It contains an exotic blend of creamy coconut and Madagascar vanilla. Now if you read my last post, then you'll understand my obsession with sweet scents. This one is no different, but it has a bit of a tropical twist. It reminds me slightly of Hawaiian Tropics sunscreen - but better, of course.

Before I continue, I want to address the fact that we all have different opinions. I'm a fan of the 'warm cookies' type of perfumes and it may not be everyone's cup of tea. It's also important to remember that perfume can smell different on one person, than it does on another. When fragrances are sprayed onto our skin, a chemical reaction occurs and ultimately our body odour (whether good or bad) creates a unique smell. Always try before you buy!

Now back to the star of this post...

The sweet undertones definitely take over, but I find it to be very calm and relaxing. It takes me back to times spent lounging on a beach, drinking pina coladas and soaking in rays.

I also really enjoy the LAVANILA brand because they use natural and organic ingredients. All of their products are free of chemicals, so they're safe and healthy to use. Plus it lasts all day long on my skin.

I purchased a rollerball size for trial purposes, but will absolutely buy a large bottle once it's gone.

Signature Scent - Pink Sugar by Aquolina

It's the first day of #FragranceWeek, and to kick it off I'm going to share my 'signature scent'. I have gone through several bottles of the Pink Sugar perfume and to this day it remains one of my favourites. I'm definitely a lover of anything that smells like cake batter or baked goods, and oh boy, does it ever! It's notes include vanilla, caramel, cotton candy and just a hint of liquorice. It's very sweet and can be a little over-powering if too much is sprayed. But it's a playful and distinctive scent. I get compliments every time I wear it.

I've worn this perfume so much over the last few years, that it truly has become my signature scent. My boyfriend even mentioned one time that he smelt it on someone else and thought of me.

Now that I am a little older, I find myself gravitating to more mature scents like Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Tom Ford Black Orchid. But there are times when I come back to this one, and it only takes one deep inhale of the delicious mist before I'm addicted again.

Plus, I never want to grow up and this perfume never fails to make me feel young and happy. I will continue to buy bottles of Pink Sugar over and over again until I can no longer stand sickly sweet scents.

The "Simple" Solution for Late Night Lazy Girls

Lazy girls unite!

If these first few words have peaked your interest, most likely you've been known to leave your makeup on overnight. I hear you! Sometimes I'm too tired to hang my head over the sink and lift my arms to wash my face. Sad, but true.

But hallelujah, the Sensitive Skin Experts at Simple have a solution for us! I'm serious when I say get in your car now and head to your local drugstore to purchase the Micellar Cleansing Water. You can thank me later...

Just apply a generous amount over a cotton pad and swipe over all areas of your face - even eyes. The best part...no need to rinse!

It's fragrance free, suitable for sensitive skin, works great for anyone struggling with dryness and helps dissolve all traces of makeup.

I'm convinced it's purely just water in a bottle, but there has got to be some mermaid powers involved because this stuff is absolutely magical! Sadly enough there are no mythical creature ingredients listed on the bottle, but it does contain a blend of minerals, multi-vitamins and gentle cleansers to eliminate dirt and impurities. It's also made with triple purified water (this doesn't help my theory) to boost the skin's hydration.

I love using this in the morning, especially when I'm in a rush. It's also great after a late night when all I want to to is crawl into bed and shut my eyes. It's the most simple solution I have found to keep my skin clean, fresh and rejuvenated even on the laziest of days.

Mani Spotlight: OPI You're Such a Budapest

Today's post is going to be quick and simple. After all, we can all use a little simplicity in our lives, right?

My Mom picked up this nail polish for me during a recent trip to Ellicottville, NY. The colour is OPI You're Such a Budapest and it's the most gorgeous periwinkle-lilac I have ever seen. I painted my nails with it about a week ago and have frequently caught myself entranced by its beauty. Sometimes it looks purple and other times it looks blue. Regardless, it is definitely more than simple. Its unique quality and ever-changing colour is what has me utterly in love. I officially dub this a spring staple and new Birdy favourite! Thanks Mom!

Ps. Isn't it so nice to see green grass? Finally!
