Green Earth Makeup + Exciting News

You're probably sick of me talking about the Colourpop Eyeshadow in So Quiche by now, but I did promise in my 'August Favourites' that I would be posting a look using the colour. Well, today's the day!

The colour is so unique and seems to change in a variety of light. It's got an olive green base with duo chrome reflects that seems to shift from gold, to purple, to pink. My current favourite way to wear it is with a reddish-pink hue blown out in the crease. It's a different kind of look from what I'm used to, but I love the way the colours contrast, yet somehow still compliment each other. I also think it's a great combo for transitioning to fall - it's still colourful without being too bright or in-your-face.

I used the Colourpop Creme Gel Colour (a.k.a. my current obsession) in Get Paid along my waterline for a little extra glimmer, and decided to use a light brown colour smudged along the lash line to soften the look ever so slightly. The eyes turned out pretty sparkly, so I decided to use matte products on the rest of my face. I didn't even use any highlighter! *gasp*

I went with the Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte in Lust For Blush - an oldie but a goodie for my lips. I had actually forgot how much I loved this lipstick until I whipped it again out for this look. I also really liked how the pink colour mirrored the shadow in my crease.

Exciting News
After two years of blogging, I have finally purchased my own domain!!! So now, instead of searching www.beautybybirdy.blogspot.ca to find my cozy little corner on the Internet, you can simply type www.beautybybirdy.ca. OK, it may be a little more exciting in my eyes...but I had to share my enthusiasm with you! EEEEEKKKKKK! AHHHHH!

Perhaps I'm still feeling all warm and fuzzy inside after celebrating two years of blogging. Or maybe it's the arrival of fall that has me incredibly inspired lately. Either way, things are getting serious over here on Beauty by Birdy and I can't wait to get to work and share more fun content with you!

September 2016 Beauty Favourites + 1 Miss

I feel like I wrote one of these posts just yesterday, but somehow it is the end of September and evidently, time to discuss some monthly favourites.

Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte Deep Cleansing Hand Soap from Bath and Body Works
I NEED this in candle form! Now that fall has officially arrived, I'm in total warm and cozy mode and obsessing over anything pumpkin related! This hand soap smells like creamy pumpkin, toasted marshmallow and warm praline...a.k.a. a sweet and delicious butter tart. I can only imagine what my house would smell like with a Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte candle burning. Plus, the packaging is pretty on point! I love the metallic gold leaves placed over the burgundy flannel.

I have used the L'Oreal Pure-Clay charcoal face mask quite a few times since I featured it in this post, and it has done wonderful things for my skin! It does everything it claims (deep cleans, minimizes pores and brightens), but most importantly it has kept my breakouts at bay! If I feel a pesky little pimple starting to emerge, I'll use this mask - sometimes just as a spot treatment - and it dries that sucker right up. Gross, right?! Hey...a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...

Colourpop Gel Liner in Get Paid
Even though this is a gel liner, I've been using it pretty regularly as a base for eyeshadows. The copper colour is so gorgeous and perfect for fall!

invisibobble ORIGINAL traceless hair ring
Dev's sister gave this to me a couple of weeks ago and it has not left my wrist (or hair) ever since! You may be thinking...what the heck is that?! It looks like an old telephone cord (side note: when was the last time you saw a phone with a cord??), but it's actually a hair elastic! The coiled shape adds uneven pressure around a ponytail, holding it tight but not too tight. It prevents unwanted kinks and avoids awful headaches. As someone who doesn't wear their hair up too often, I pretty much get a headache every time I do...until now! I'm also pretty crap at putting my hair into a messy bun - something I've always blamed on having thin hair - but the invisibboble makes it incredibly easy!

Finally, I wanted to talk about one product miss from the month of September. I accidentally bought the Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara in waterproof and I have to admit, I am not a fan. I'm normally not fond of waterproof mascaras to begin with (they're too difficult to remove), so I can only blame myself for not liking this product. Perhaps the original formula works better, but I find it extremely wet! I have yet to apply a coat without flicking some onto my eyelids.

I'm hoping after a couple of weeks, as it dries out, it will work a little better for me. And who knows maybe I'll enjoy using it a little more when Dev and I jet off to Jamaica for a destination wedding in November!

Two Year Blogiversary | 15 More Random Facts About Me

It's been two years since I launched Beauty by Birdy!!! It was on the first day of Fall in 2014 that I made the decision to try my hand at this whole blogging thing. Somehow it seems so long ago, yet I feel as though no time has passed. Initially I had no idea how dedicated I would become to my recreational project, but I love it even more than I did way back when.

To celebrate my little blog's birthday, I thought I would share 15 more random facts about myself:

1. I love hikes! Especially in the fall when leaves are changing colour.
2. I brush my teeth with warm hot water. I'm not really sure why and it's been a habit of mine for years...
3. While we're on the topic of teeth...I once had six (baby) teeth pulled at the same time.

4. My favourite animal is a tiger. Rawwwwwr.
5. I have a bath at least once a week and sometimes more in the winter.
6. My ears are the only piercings on my body. I'm too chicken to get any more.
7. Volleyball is my favourite sport.

8. I have an awful memory!
9. I rarely drink pop, but when/if I do it's probably going to be Root Beer.
10. My alcoholic beverage of choice (at least for the moment) is a smooth red wine or vodka soda.
11. I've been using an iPhone with a shattered screen for the past eight months. It still works...
12. I have an ├╝ber girl crush on Margot Robbie at the moment!
13. I like surprises, but I LOVE trying to spoil surprises. It's like a mystery and I'm Nancy Drew!
14. I have a scar on my chin - the result of a basement rollerblading incident on my 10th birthday.
15. I shamelessly enjoy watching Jeopardy.

Now, I can't end a 'blogiversary' post without saying a huge thank you! Thank you for visiting Beauty by Birdy and reading my content. Thank you for double tapping my Instagram photos. Thank you for connecting with me on Twitter. Thank you for sending me feedback on Facebook. And finally, thank you to my friends and family who have been constant supporters since the beginning. Sending you all lots of love and cyber hugs!

Sunflower Inspired 'Dotticure'

During my visit to the Weir's Lavender Farm back in August, I was somehow more captivated by the sunflowers, rather than the lavender plants. Don't get me wrong, they're both beautiful! But I've always been quite fascinated by the large yellow blooms that resemble the sun. How do they get so big?! I can't help but smile at the sight of one - they're just so bright and cheerful!

Sunflowers (at least to me) signify the end of summer and introduce our first glimpse of fall colours. Seeing as the season changes next week, it seemed like the perfect time for a manicure inspired by the unique flower.

I decided to add my own twist, however, and turned it into a 'dotticure'. I used the smallest dotting tool I owned to stipple brown, orange and yellow spots that made up the shape of a sunflower. It may be a little more abstract than other manicures I've seen floating around the Internet, but I like being different and I like how it turned out.

I decided to add some polka dots to my other fingers using the same colours to tie everything together and finished it off with a matte top coat. I like how the matte finish dulled the colours ever so slightly and made it even more fall appropriate.

A Little Birdy Life Update - Busy Summer

As it always does, summer flew by this year! I can't believe fall is just around the corner, although the chillier weather and dark mornings hints that it's true. I haven't posted nearly as much as I would have liked to during the past few months and I thought I would share why. I never want to make excuses, but sometimes life gets busy!

Let's start with love and marriage. No...I did not elope, but Dev and I did attend three weddings.

One in June...

I was honoured to be a bridesmaid for my cousin's wedding
(it was my first time being part of a bridal party).

One in July...

Who doesn't love a good photo booth?

And one in August...

Dev and I tested our skills as emcee for his sister's wedding. It was fun!

We had a great time at each one, despite Dev's interesting accessory...a large grey boot for his broken foot. You may remember I mentioned his injury in my Chicago Adventures post a few months ago, which ended up being a really awesome trip and the highlight of my summer. I never actually explained how he broke his foot, however, which kind of leads up to my next item...

This summer, friends of ours decided to start a co-ed recreational baseball team and join a league. Unfortunately for Dev, who rolled his ankle and heard a loud 'POP' during practice one night...he was out for the series. I must say he made a pretty wicked coach though!

Now, it was my first time playing, and I wasn't the best at swinging a bat or catching the ball, but I did have fun playing alongside some pretty awesome ladies...and gents!

I suppose you can say I had a pretty active summer. In addition to softball on Tuesdays or Thursdays, I also played beach volleyball (my favourite sport) every Wednesday night. Both of these leagues are over now, which makes me sad and unsure what to do with all of my free time. I suppose I could blog some more... ;)

Some of you may remember that Dev and I purchased kayaks last summer. They were one of the best investments we've made, but unfortunately did not get used nearly as much as we would have liked to during the warmer months. Now that my beau has a foot again, we plan to make up for lost time and get out as much as possible before snow arrives. We recently brought them up to a friend's cottage in Muskoka for the long weekend and had one of the most epic morning paddles, with smoke on the water (cue musical lyrics). It felt good to be back!

A few weeks ago I wrote probably the most intense exam of my life! It was online and open book, but took place over a 48-hour period. For those of you who may be new to my blog, I've been working towards a CAE (Certified Association Executive) designation for the past couple of years, and this was the home stretch. The task was to write three different reports, each valued at a different marking scale. The questions were made available at noon on a Friday and each one had to be submitted by noon on Sunday. It was a definite test of perseverance! My fingers were sore from typing so much. My eyes were tired from staring at a computer screen so long. My body was jittery from endless cups of caffeine. My mind was fuzzy from few hours of sleep. But I am VERY happy to say that I PASSED! The hard work paid off and I now have the right to use the CAE designation after my name! WOOOOOHOOOOOO!

Beauty by Birdy's second birthday is very near! How has it been two years already?! And now that the summertime craziness has settled, I am looking forward to utilizing some spare time during the fall and winter to push out more fun content. Stay tuned!

Brightening My Day AND Skin With The New L'Oreal Pure-Clay Face Mask

A couple of nights ago I was feeling a little down and not quite like myself. Lucky for me, I have a superhero boyfriend who suggested we go buy a face mask, some snacks and chill out while watching a movie. Not many guys would be willing to participate in a pamper session, let alone put forth the recommendation. He's just the best and I am very thankful!

Timing also seemed pretty perfect as L'Oreal recently released a line of affordable masks that I've wanted to try but had yet to find in stores. Finally spotting the trio on shelves seemed to lift my spirits ever so slightly. Is that sad? I think not. I suppose I am a girl with simple needs and discovering new beauty products makes me happy.

The L'Oreal Pure-Clay Masks come in three colours, each containing different ingredients and serving different purposes. The green helps eliminate oils and the orange is a mask-scrub hybrid to exfoliate. Dev and I opted for the black energizing and brightening mask, which contains charcoal to draw out impurities.

I've only used the mask once, but so far I'm impressed! It's very similar in texture, performance and even scent as the original GlamGlow treatment, which I reviewed and fell in love with way back when I first started Beauty by Birdy. At just $12.99, it's a total drugstore dupe!

It's a little thicker in texture, but spread easily and evenly to cover my face. We waited about 15 minutes and gawked at the oil spots that began to surface, before using a damp cloth to wash the dried mask away. Blemishes that were beginning to poke through seemed to be reduced, my skin felt super soft, tighter and more luminous. But most importantly, my mood was brightened! It's crazy what a good face mask and some relaxation can do for one's sanity.

So fellas, next time you're gal is in a funk, I highly recommend taking a cue from Dev -
it absolutely cheered me up! And if you're not sure which brand to reach for while browsing the drugstore for a mask, definitely check out the new L'Oreal range.

August 2016 Beauty & Lifestyle Favourites

August is over and we just a few weeks away from the first official day of Fall. Despite not wanting summer to be over just yet, I am secretly stoked for deep lip colours and pumpkin flavoured everything - drinks, candles, body wash - you name it, I want it!

Yes, yes...it's all very exciting, but first we need to discuss the beauty products and lifestyle items that stole my heart last month.

ColourPop Eyeshadow in So Quiche
While I have nothing but positive things to say about the formula of ColourPop eyeshadows, I'm more so obsessed with the colour and duo chrome of this beauty. It's unique, yet very versatile. I've paired it with a myriad of colours, but my favourite combination so far is with a pinky-red in the crease. You can expect to see a fall inspired look featuring this eye on the blog in the next couple of weeks.

Pretty much every time I wore makeup last month I reached for this metallic olive shadow. I just think it is so beautiful and I can't get enough!

NYC Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder
I'm shocked at how much I like this translucent loose powder. It was ridiculously inexpensive and the packaging is not all that impressive, but the product inside did not disappoint! You know what they say...don't judge a book by it's cover...

I've been using the NYC Smooth Skin Loose Powder with my Real Techniques Sponge to swiftly 'bake' my under eye areas. If you're a newbie in the makeup department, 'baking' is a step in which a loose powder is packed fairly heavily onto the skin and left there for five or 10 minutes to melt and set the concealer. Once time is up, a soft brush can be used to flick away the excess powder. My skin is a little too dry for long periods of 'cooking', so I just let it sit for a minute or two. The end result is smoother looking skin and minimal creasing throughout the day.

I'm amazed at how flawless my skin appears when I use this powder. Pores seem to be filled in but it never looks cake-y. It's a definite drugstore gem in my opinion.

Apothecary Italian Blood Orange Candle
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a really intense exam (I'll talk more about this in my next blog post). This candle helped me focus and stay zen, despite downing five - or six - cups of tea, which led to some serious caffeine jitters. The bright, citrus scent filled my room and acted as an energy booster when I needed it the most.

I'm also obsessed with the packaging! Isn't it beautiful?? I love the shape of the glass jar, the sophisticated label and the cute little bow tied around the top.

Stranger Things on Netflix
If you have not watched or even heard of this show yet, you're probably hiding under a rock. GET ON IT! It's strange. It's dramatic. It's horrific. It's mysterious. It's amazing!!

I'm not much of a sci-fi gal, but I absolutely loved this show! I think it would cater to a variety of audiences because there is so much substance to the plot. There's a couple of love stories that form, some humour and many scenes of terror. Admittedly I binge watched the last five episodes on a rainy day. The suspense was too much to handle and I just couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Stranger Things is one of the very few shows Dev and I have watched together and it's been renewed for a second season to be released in 2017, which makes me a happy, happy Birdy!

That's it, that's all! Farewell August, it's been grand.
