Five Favourite Lip Colours For Winter

I'm back! I took a wee break during the holidays to chill out, enjoy some family time and eat enough food to feed seven horses. And while I've truly enjoyed being a blob and doing pretty much nothing, it's time to be productive again! I'm starting off by sharing five of my favourite lip colours for the snow-y season.

From left to right: Mac Faux, ColourPop Frick N' Frack, NYX Prague,
Sephora Blackberry Sorbet and Maybelline Siren in Scarlet

Last year I actually opted to skip this post and talk about my favourite nail polishes instead, but seeing as the first official day of winter arrived last 'hump day', I thought I would revisit the series and talk about some old and new lip staples.

Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Blackberry
This is a newer favourite of mine - you may remember I received a mini version in the limited edition holiday collection earlier this month. As I swatched the gorgeous burgundy shade, I new it would become a favourite for colder months. It's bold and matte but doesn't feel drying on the lips, and the best part is it lasts from AM until PM. I already have a full-size sitting in my basket online waiting to be purchased.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in Siren in Scarlet
This is pretty much my go-to red for the holidays! It's a classic colour - on the slightly darker side - with a velvet finish and looks so stunning with a simple eye. Although fairly long-wearing, this product is definitely not a liquid lipstick and contains oils to help it feel more comfortable, so there's potential for it to slip around while eating or sipping on a glass of wine. I always use a matching liner and blot to remove excess product. But trust me, the colour, formula and finish are worth it!

MAC Lipstick in Faux
Every season needs a good nude! When I'm not sure what lipstick to wear, this is usually my fall-back. The neutral pink works with everything and has a slight satin finish, so it feels nice and moisturizing on the lips.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague
Do we notice a matte trend happening here? Over the last year I have definitely gravitated to these types of finishes, and for some reason I just like the look more during the winter. Prague is described as a merlot colour and I have to agree! On me, I sometimes see hints of purple undertones but otherwise it's definitely a winter-perfect berry hue.

ColourPop Satin Lip in Frink N' Frack
Another newcomer to my winter faves - I just can't get enough of this dusty pink/brown liquid lipstick! I absolutely love how the colour is dark without being too dark and it lasts for eons, leaving behind a slight stain once all the product has worn off.

I don't know about you, but a little lipstick definitely seems to make the dreary, short days of winter feel a little brighter and more exciting. What are some of your favourites?

Glitter Christmas Tree Nail Art

The glitter saga continues!!

After #GlitterWeek ended, I felt slightly deprived of sparkles, and so I started experimenting with the NYX Face & Body Glitters to test how versatile they really can be. While I had a ton of fun creating festive makeup looks using these sparkly pigments, I wanted to see how they would work on other parts of my body - like my nails! I came up with this Christmas-y manicure and I absolutely love how it turned out! It was also really easy too!

I started with a black base and used tape to create triangle shapes (like a Christmas tree). After applying a fresh coat of nail polish to act as an adhesive, I generously sprinkled the glitter pigments over the top and let it dry before removing each piece of tape. I chose to use pink, blue and gold, but this look can be recreated using absolutely any colour! I would suggest trying a white base instead of black to make the glitters pop a little more.

Finally, I glued a star stud at the point of each triangle and the nail art was complete! The NYX pigments have silver reflects, so it really looks like twinkling lights shining on a tree.

If you're going to try to re-create this manicure, I'd suggest using a top coat to lock everything in place or you'll end up with sparkles everywhere!!!! On your face, in your hair, on your clothes and in your food...

My Favourite Holiday Movies

I could probably watch each one of these holiday movies a million times over and never get tired of them. In fact, a bunch are from when I was a kid and they're still favourites of mine! Can you believe Elf and Love Actually were both released in 2003?!

In no particular order, my favourite Christmas-y films are:

The Santa Clause
I will never get tired of watching Scott Calvin being transported to the North Pole and eventually taking on the role of Santa Claus. There are so many magical elements that thrill my imagintation, as both a child and adult. And while the two films that followed are fun and creative as well, I still enjoy the original most.

White Christmas
An oldie but a goodie! I love musicals and this one always gets me singing along. I'm shocked at how few of my friends have not seen this movie and constantly recommend that they do.

The Grinch
Story time...

I was just 10 years old when Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas was released as a live action film. It is actually the first movie I remember seeing in theatre with both my mom and dad as a family. I loved it so much and remember begging my parents to rent it for me the minute it was released on VHS at Blockbuster (oh the good ol' days of video rental stores). It was a few weeks before Christmas and my parent's let me open a present early. Sure enough, it was the movie!! I'll never forget that moment, and thus this movie holds a special place in my heart.

Love Actually
With nine different stories that eventually intertwine, this film is never boring. In fact, I find myself still noticing new bits even though I've watched it probably 30 times over.

Elf has been on TV so much this year, and admittedly I've watched it five times already. I'm not the biggest fan of Will Ferrell, but as Buddy the elf he's hilarious! There are so many good lines that I find myself quoting, including:

"SANTAAAA! I know him!"

"We elves try to stick to the four main good groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup."

The Polar Express
Another story of magic and wonder, with the addition of amazing animation. As a huge fan of Tom Hanks, I also appreciate his portrayal of many different characters in the movie.

Honourable mentions go to Just Friends, which I consider a holiday movie, but it's also just a great chick flick in general. And Holiday Engagement, a not so well-known movie that is typically shown on TV or can also be found on Netflix. It's about a woman who hires a man to act as her boyfriend and tries to convince her family they're in love when she brings him home for the holidays. It's your typical rom-com and I bet you can guess what happens in the end.

Which Christmas movies do you seem to watch again and again, year after year? Leave me a comment below!

Bath & Body Works Holiday Candle Haul

It's the most wonderful time of the year when Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candles go on sale! I had picked up a couple during Black Friday, and went back the next weekend for a few more. There's something about their winter and holiday collections that gets me year after year. The scents of course are to die for, but this year it's the packaging! I'm OBSESSED with the foiled labels, cute character illustrations and frosted glasses.

The candles I purchased include:

'Tis The Season
Notes of Red Delicious Apple, Sweet Cinnamon Bark and Cedarwood

It literally smells like Christmas in a candle!

Marshmallow Fireside
Notes of Toasted Marshmallow, Smoldering Woods, Fire Roasted Vanilla and Crystallized Amber

A repeat favourite of mine.

Winter Candy Apple
Notes of Red Apple, Candied Orange, Maple Leaf, Fresh Cinnamon and Winter Rose Petals

It has birdies on it!!!

Maple Cinnamon Pancakes
Notes of Warm Maple Syrup, Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes and Fresh Ground Cinnamon

Be warned: breakfast cravings may occur at first sniff of this candle.

Spiced Gingerbread
Notes of Spiced Gingerbread, Vanilla Icing and Sparkling Cinnamon Sugar

I burned through one of these in nearly a week and needed to buy a back-up!

I actually don't burn candles all year round, but when the days get shorter and the nights get colder, you can count on me burning one every day to fill the house with warm scents. There's nothing better than lighting a candle and snuggling under a blanket to watch a Christmas movie! Would you agree?

Sparkly Gold Cut Crease Holiday Makeup

Welcome to the third and final post of #GlitterWeek!! We've covered Glitter Liner, Glitter Lips and now Glitter Lids! It's also my first cut crease look on Beauty by Birdy. The combination of gold glitter with a touch of green in the crease is perfect for a Christmas gathering. I paired the entire look with a deep berry lip because I like how dramatic, yet formal it ended up looking, but it can easily be paired with a nude...or red if you're really feeling all gung-ho holidays.

Now I'll be honest - cut creases are a little difficult! But I have learned a few tricks by trial and error that have made it easier:

1. Tape & Shape
A piece of scotch tape applied on an angle from the bottom lash line up to the brow tail can act as a guide for all shadows. It creates a sharp wing when peeled away and collects most fall-out, making for easy cleanup.

2. Dip & Flip
After dipping a flat shader brush into the shadow of your choosing, flip it upside down so most of the colour is buffed into the upper crease. It will help keep your lid mostly clean.

3. Slow & Steady
Most importantly...have patience! Use a small amount of shadow at a time and slowly build up the intensity. It's always easy to add more colour, rather than take it away.

I used the NYX Glitter Primer all over my lid as an adhesive for the golden/bronze NYX Face & Body Glitter, but also to create a sharp line between the crease and lid space. I have tried this look with a gel liner and cream shadow for the base, but found the end result looked a little too heavy.

For those of you who are thinking 'What the heck? Cut the cheese? I mean, crease...' Don't worry! I have an Eyeshadow for Beginners post planned to go up in the new year. But to define the technique, a cut crease is a sharp definition between contrasting shadows. It can tend to make the eyes look a little larger.

Add Some Glitz To Your Lips

Welcome to day two of #GlitterWeek! I've been so excited to share this one with you! It's probably my absolutely favourite way to rock the NYX Face & Body Glitter, and also the easiest. We're talking about GLITTER LIPS!!!!

Just simply pat some of the sparkling pigment over wet liquid lipstick and watch it transform! In the spirit of Christmas, I used the Sephora Mini Cream Lip Stain in Always Red and applied a copper glitter over the top, creating a super shimmery, somewhat metallic-like finish.

The best part is it's fairly long wearing! I went about eight hours and it even survived salad and pasta (both of which were pretty oily) and a glass of wine! It is definitely not kiss proof though, so just be cautious of who you smooch under the mistletoe or when the clock strikes midnight on New Years.

I have found it works best if you do one lip at a time, so the product underneath doesn't dry before you have time to apply the sparkles. You really want to make sure the pigment has something to grab onto so it stays in place. The most effective way to apply the glitter is with a clean finger, which seems to pick up and distribute the product evenly, without losing any colour intensity.

I'm absolutely obsessed with the ruby red slippers effect! I wish it were acceptable to wear this lip every day, but unfortunately I don't think it is overly office appropriate. And in my case, I'm not sure my dog would really care about my glitter lips during the four days I work from home. Regardless, I think it's super festive and perfect to wear during the holidays.

Festive Twinkling Blue Eyeliner

I've been having a blast playing around with the NYX Face & Body Glitters lately!! They're so versatile and a fun way to add a little sparkle to any look. Especially during the holidays when Christmas and glitter just seem to go hand in hand, am I right?!

I've decided to name this week #GlitterWeek, to show you a few festive ways to use these twinkling pigments. Instead of my usual Tuesday and Friday schedule, you can expect a post on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday this week!

We're kicking it off with this royal blue glitter liner! I love how these loose pigments easily transform with a little help from the NYX Glitter Primer. I squeezed a pea size amount onto the back of my hand and shook a decent amount of blue glitter directly overtop. I combined the two together until all of the colour was incorporated. I then picked up some of the creamy mixture onto a small brush and applied it along my lash line as if it were a gel liner. It wasn't quite as pigmented or sparkly as I had anticipated, so at the end I used the same brush and pressed some extra dry glitter directly on top of the wing I created.

For some reason I always associate navy blue and sparkly things with New Years! I think it's because I once bought a sequinned blue and silver tube dress, with the intent of wearing it to an end of year party, which didn't happen...

My point is, I think this look would be especially perfect for ringing in 2017! Although it's great for any day or any occasion during the year too, and because these glitters come in a variety of hues, this look can be recreated using any colour of the rainbow! Or ALL colours, creating a rainbow glitter liner...how cool would that be?! I may have to try it...

November 2016 Beauty & Lifestyle Favourites

Guilty! I skipped my October favourites last month, but I'm (hopefully) making it up to you by sharing a bunch of great things this time around. Continue reading to see everything I loved during the month of November.

Garnier Travel Size SkinActive Micellar Water
It's the moment I have been waiting for and it came conveniently before going to Jamaica last month! Garner released its fabulous micellar water in an adorable travel friendly bottle! I'm not sure if this is actually available in Canada yet (my mom spotted it on a shelf while shopping in the states a few weeks ago), but chances are it will be coming our way soon! I literally cannot live without this product and have used many bottles over the year. This new petite size makes it so much easier to pack and carry with me wherever I go.

Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Nourish Conditioner
While I do enjoy the shampoo from this range, I like the conditioner even more! As I mentioned in my product review, it's on the thicker side - like a hair mask. It's very rich and can take some work to rinse away, but I find it tames some of my frizz and makes my usually thin hair appear more full. I took this away with me to Jamaica and while there's basically no hope for me and humidity, I did feel like it helped repair my hair from the ocean. Instead of dry and crunchy strands, it felt soft and hydrated. The sweet scent also seems to linger, which I enjoy.

Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47
It may seem strange to talk about a sunscreen as we gear up for colder months, but SPF is just as important during the fall and winter as it is in the summer! I actually used it on my face while in Jamaica and aside from a little redness on my nose, it did a really great job preventing a sunburn. The all-natural formula is suitable for sensitive skin, therefore it never made me break out, which is often a problem I have with chemical sunscreens. It's lightweight, massages in easily, does not feel greasy and with the addition of green tea, it has a lovely scent! I now use it every day under my makeup.

Revlon Parfumerie Scented Nail Enamel in Autumn Spice
I bought this polish with the intent of creating a 'Fall Scented Beauty Products' post way back when I first started Beauty by Birdy. Unfortunately the post never came to be and then I completely forgot I had this unique nail colour! To answer your question...yes, it actually does smell! There is still a chemical essence is when first applied, but as it dries a faint scent of cinnamon becomes noticeable. I've often caught a whiff while fussing with a strand of hair or scratching an itch on my face. It's delightful!!

The colour is absolutely stunning as well! It's a chocolate-y brown with red and gold multi-dimensional shimmers, which can make it look a little copper-y or purple in different lighting. It's unique and perfect for this time of year.

Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder Compact in Highlight 01
This product has been on my 'want list' for a very, very long time! I've swatched it numerous times in Sephora and ogled at the gorgeous pale champagne highlight, but I could never justify the hefty price tag ($48). Until last month! I finally ordered this stunner and I am SOOOOO HAPPY I did!

The matte finish powder provides a radiance to the skin without adding any shimmer or glitter. It's the most natural looking glow I've ever seen. Trust me, I have tried to go overboard with this product and I don't think it's possible! It has a sheer formula, which can be built up to a desired opacity, but even super pigmented it still looks luminous and natural. I've been wearing it every day since it arrived on my doorstep!

ColourPop Ultra Satin Lip in Frick N' Frack
This was my perfect fall colour, and it's quickly becoming a go-to for winter as well! The rosy-brown liquid lipstick is vampy, but not too dark and super long wearing! My only complaint about this product is about the packaging itself, because all of the beautiful silver writing has rubbed off and I haven't even had it for long.

Bath and Body Works Spiced Gingerbread Candle
I just bought this yummy candle last weekend while shopping Black Friday sales, but the minute I inhaled the spicy, yet sweet scent, I knew it would be a favourite and I've been burning it every day since! With notes of vanilla icing, sparkling cinnamon sugar and fresh ground nutmeg, it smells almost exactly like a fresh pack of Voortman Gingerbreak Cookies. I wish I had bought more than one!

I'm also head over heels for all of the Bath and Body Works holiday packaging this year - the designs are so festive and beautiful! I love the gold metallic borders on each label and the embossed tree on each lid is such a cute added detail.

The Girl On The Train
I know...I'm a little late on this one, but I don't seem to read as often as I used to...

A friend kindly let me borrow her copy to take away with me, and after getting through the first chapter I was sucked into the plot. I have yet to read the entire thing and the suspense is absolutely killing me. Whodunnit?!

It's narrated by a few different characters (all of whom are slightly damaged), which provides a look at the story from multiple angles. It's hard to ever take a side of the three female protagonists - just when you begin to believe they're good, a twist or secret about their past is revealed, making them unlikable again. However, it's this flip-flopping that makes the pages so easy to read. It's never boring and I constantly find myself thinking, 'what happens next?'

Marvels Jessica Jones on Netflix
This Marvel series can be added to a very small list of TV shows that Dev and I have enjoyed watching together. Seriously...Game of Thrones, Vikings, Gotham, Stranger Things and now Jessica Jones are the only shows we've really made 'date night' out of. I say date night lightheartedly because it seems ironic that we wear comfy clothing and don't leave the house. Regardless, it's an entertaining activity we both enjoy!

Jessica Jones in particular is dark, mysterious, twisted, gory and super captivating. I found myself curious at the end of each episode and eager to watch the next. Krysten Ritter is super bad-ass as the a-typical superhero and I love her sarcasm.

Unfortunately with all Netflix shows, it's impossible to watch just one episode at a time. Therefore it didn't take us long to complete the entire series, and now I'm sad that I have to wait for season two (if that is even in the works) to watch more.

Adult Colouring
Colouring seemed like the perfect activity to keep me busy on our flight to Jamaica, but ironically I didn't end up using my fresh pack of markers and the eye-catching colouring book remained tucked into a pocket of my carry-on bag. I blame Girl On A Train, which kept me entertained pretty much the entire flight there and back.

But for some reason I decided to start colouring one night while relaxing at home and I've been enjoying the peaceful activity almost every day since. It's my time to unwind and think about nothing but colouring inside the lines.

By now we shouldn't be surprised when trends repeat themselves...bell bottoms, turtlenecks, fringe, overalls, crop tops and even jelly sandals have all made a comeback. Now chokers are making their triumphant return and there are so many styles that have me weak in the knees! The two I've been wearing recently are from Forever21 and I like that they are both so different. One is a layered, black suede necklace with beaded accents (similar) and can be worn casually with a ton of different shirts or sweaters, while the other is a silver chain (similar) that adds a bit of shine around the neck and can dress up any outfit. I wore it in the photos for my brown monochromatic makeup post you can see here

I hope you enjoyed this monthly favourites post. It's going to be the last one of 2016, since the end of December will mark a time to discuss products I discovered and loved throughout the entire year.

Ps. Christmas is so soon! Who's excited?!
