The other evening I was trying to brainstorm ideas for blog posts. Struggling with a bit of writers block, I thought “why not recruit Dev to help”? I asked him to shuffle through my collection of makeup and pick out products he wanted me to use.
He seemed a little overwhelmed at the request to pick an entire face of makeup for me. He’s so sweet and didn’t want to select any “wrong” items (which I actually thinking would have been hilarious). So I helped him by picking most basics and everything I would need for a base. This included foundation, concealer, powder and mascara.
Anything colourful, like eyeshadow, blush and lipstick was left up to him. He selected the Too Faced Original Chocolate Bar Palette, which I was quite excited about because I haven’t used it in ages. But when I asked him which shadow he specifically wanted me to use, he pointed to my least favourite, the shimmery purple called Candied Violet.
Now, those that know my boyfriend, will know that he really likes purple. He convinced me to paint our bedroom purple. Not just any purple…BARNEY PURPLE. I recently asked him what colour cushions we should get for our outdoor patio furniture and he suggested purple…
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against purple. But this shadow in particular is hard to work with. It turns into a bit of a muddy colour when blended out and the shimmer does not adhere very well. I used multiple, multiple sprays of facial mist in an attempt to make it more pigmented and shimmery. But as you can see, the eyes turned out much more smokey than I had intended, and I think Dev had hoped. His response when I showed him the end result was “it’s a very layered and intense look.”
I also used the darkest colour in the palette to create a strong wing that blended into the crease. It’s not a look I would wear every day, but I’m happy I went for something different and a little risky. After all, makeup is always about having fun and playing around with different looks. At the end of the day, it washes off.
For bronzer, blush and highlight he picked winners! Although my Hoola Bronzer is on it’s last legs and doesn’t blend on the skin like it used to. The NARS Blush in Sin has a nice berry tone, which complimented the eyeshadow well. And the Laura Mercier Highlighter goes with everything.
To top off my purple look he picked…a purple lip gloss. Luckily it’s quite a sheer colour and translates a little more pink on the lips.
Now if only I can convince Dev to try and DO my makeup. I’d love to record it as a video. Would you guys like to see that?
