Everything I Bought During My First Trip to ULTA

May 12, 2018

Mom Appreciation Blurb

I didn’t have any specific Mother’s Day posts planned, but as I write this first paragraph, it’s turning into a bit of a Mom appreciate blurb. There’s no one else that would spend two hours in an ULTA with me. She calmly watched me bounce from aisle to aisle, and back again. She tolerated my inability to make decisions. And she supported/persuaded me to put something back on a shelf, after carrying it around in my shopping bag for 20 minutes, because I truly didn’t ‘need’ it. Thanks Mom!

The Haul…

Let’s be honest…I didn’t need any of this. They’re all wants. But I couldn’t help myself once I entered the motherland of makeup. The United States chain, ULTA, is a less crowded version of Sephora, with a mixture of high-end and drugstore brands. They carry more expensive brands like Tarte, Estée Lauder, Urban Decay Cosmetics and Lancôme. They also carry some really affordable brands like Dr. Teals, e.l.f. Cosmetics, and Maybelline. I was most interested in brands that I know are a little more tough to get in Canada, like Catrice, Makeup Revolution, frank body, J.Cat Beauty and L.A. Girl.

Unfortunately, the ULTA we went to didn’t carry everything I was looking for. But I definitely got sucked into some extras that were on sale. One thing I noticed is that they seem to have a slew of promos, especially BOGO 50% off.

If you’re curious to know about everything I picked up during my first trip to ULTA, grab a cup of coffee and continue reading! Let’s kick it off with all things skincare related, shall we?

Skincare

The number one ‘want’ on my list was from TONYMOLY. All sheet masks were buy one, get one 50% off and I couldn’t resist the adorable packaging. I grabbed the Vitalizing Rose Sheet Mask, the Purifying Cactus Sheet Mask, the Elasticity Pomegranate Sheet Mask, and the Radiance Olive Sheet Mask.

I’ve heard great things about these face masks and I can’t wait to test them out. Will they live up to their adorable marketing tactics? We shall see.

Speaking of packaging…

How cute is this little banana hand cream? While the packaging is cute and gimmicky, it’s actually the scent that made me buy it. The TONYMOLY Magic Food Banana Hand Milk smells exactly like marshmallow bananas. Now, I have tried quite a few products since bringing them home, including this one, and I have to admit that I’m disappointed the scent doesn’t linger for longer. But it is super cute and works well to soothe my dry hands.

While Mario Badescu is available in Canada, I find it difficult to get a hold of. So I took advantage that it was basically at my fingertips while I was in ULTA and I purchased a few things. I’ve reviewed the Drying Lotion before (see here) and it’s been my go-to zit-zapper ever since. My bottle is nearly empty, so it was time to buy a new one. I stumbled upon this convenient Grab and Go Travel Set, which features a full-size Drying Lotion and a travel size Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater, another favourite of mine.

I also decided to give the Camomile Eye Cream a try. It’s a very rich, balmy consistency – almost like a very soft, potted lip balm – and feels super hydrating under the eyes. A little goes a long way, and the jar feels enormous compared to other eye creams I’ve used in the past. I’m sure this one will last me a while!

I also received a free gift with purchase, taking home a deluxe size sample of the Rose Hips Mask.

You guys know I love the L’Oreal Pure-Clay Masks. So when they too were buy one, get one 50% off, I caved! I picked up the yellow Pure Clay Clarify & Smooth Mask and the Pure Sugar Nourish & Soften Scrub. Oh my goodness, the scrub smells like chocolate and it is delightful!!

Shower/Bath

Now, I suppose these next items could also be considered skincare products. But I think they’re more suited to be categorized as bath and shower products. After all, that’s where I’ll be using them!

With summer around the corner, I want my booty and legs to look toned, smooth and glowing. This little sachet houses beautiful, orange-scented coffee grounds that can be used to buff away dry skin. It’s often said that caffeine helps reduce cellulite. HELLO! Sign me up!

The frank body Original Coffee Scrub also contains ingredients like almond oil, macadamia oil and cacao, which further help to reduce unwanted lumps and bumps, and leave the skin feeling nourished at the same time. My only complaint is that this stuff can get pretty messy. Be sure to rinse your shower down before or after you step out, otherwise you’ll leave a gritty mess for the next person.

I love Dr. Teals! It’s such an affordable brand that makes bath time more relaxing and enjoyable. Again, the BOGO 50% off sale got me, and I couldn’t resist stocking up on a couple of items. I think everyone else was doing the same though, as the shelf was nearly empty! Luckily, there was a bag of the Pure Epsom Salt Soaking Solution with Coconut Oil and a bottle of Coconut Oil Foaming Bath left. This scent is incredible and reminds me of summer!

I believe the eos Shave Creams are available for purchase in Canada now, but I’ve never seen the tropical fruit scent before. It smells divine and makes me actually want to shave my legs. Who am I?!

The red Butter London Nail Lacquer I picked up is not a bath or shower product. Somehow it snuck into the photo with my shaving cream. But it is absolutely gorgeous! I was so happy to find it on a clearance shelf for less than $4! I’ve never tried a Butter London Nail Lacquer, but I know that they cost between $16-$20 in Canada. I haven’t been wearing much colour on my nails lately, but when I saw this shimmering red, I felt the need to have it. Especially after seeing the red ticketed price tag. It’s quite a festive hue and will probably be put to better use in the winter. But it also reminds me of Dorothy’s ruby slippers and I’m slightly obsessed!

Makeup

Bloggers, YouTubers and beauty junkies have all been raving about the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Colors. It was only time before I tried one for myself. That time came a couple of weekends ago at ULTA when they were (can you guess?) BOGO 50% off!!!

Even though there’s only one pictured here, I did take advantage of the sale and grabbed two. The baby pink colour I picked up (called Dreamer) went missing for a couple of days. Luckily Dev found it in his car! I was seriously so sad and worried that it was going to be lost forever, because I am so excited about these!!!! I’m sure I’ll talk about them more in an upcoming blog post, but they wear well and for HOUUUUURS! They also smell like cake. The shade you see pictured below is Ruler.

The NYX Butter Glosses were half price and I wanted a more natural looking colour, so I picked up Creme Brûlée. Which is a pretty, pinky-brown but it applies really sheer.

Finally, the last two products I purchased are from Makeup Revolution. I was in need of a new concealer, and I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the money on Tarte Shape Tape, so I grabbed the Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Full Coverage Conceal & Contour instead. The applicator looks very similar, but it was much, much cheaper! I have been using it for the past couple of weeks and I really like it! It’s very full coverage but doesn’t seem to look dry or cake-y on me. They also had a pretty impressive shade range.

And last, but not least, I decided I ‘needed’ a new highlighter in my life. For some reason I’m really into pinky glows at the moment, so I purchased the Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in the shade Radiant Lights. I’ll be honest…it’s a bit chunky, but a gorgeous colour on my pale skin, nonetheless.

That’s it guys! Did you make it to the end of this post? If you did, please give yourself a very large pat on the back. That was a doozy! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed seeing everything I picked up during my first trip to ULTA. I’ll definitely be back there to buy more some day (after I give my credit card a bit of a break).
