Healthy Maple Hot Chocolate

November 23, 2018

Lately I’ve been putting a twist on my Healthy Hot Chocolate Recipe and if I’m honest, I’ve had (at least) one a day this week. This Healthy Maple Hot Chocolate is so, so good and makes me feel warm and cozy as the weather gets more and more chilly. It’s a sweet treat to satisfy sugar cravings and replaces a hot cup of tea when I don’t really need any more caffeine.

I have a Nespresso Milk Frother, so I just add about 1/2 cup of 1% milk to that. I sometimes use almond milk instead, but it doesn’t froth very well. So when I want my cup of cocoa to feel a little more special, I use REAL milk! It tricks my mind into thinking it’s whipped cream or melted marshmallows on top.

The other ingredients include cocoa powder, maca powder, coconut oil and 100% real maple syrup. It’s really quick and easy too make too. I just plop 2 Tsp of cocoa powder, 1/2 Tsp of maca powder and 1Tsp of coconut oil in the bottom of a mug. I then pour some boiling water so my mug is filled nearly half way. Taking a spoon or a whisk, I stir the ingredients to make sure it’s all melted and dissolved. My biggest pet peeve is hot chocolate with chunks! YUCK! This stirring process is very important.

Next I’ll pour in the frothed milk and stir everything until the colour turns to a light brown. The last step is the most crucial step in making this Healthy Maple Hot Chocolate…it’s maple syrup!! I add about 2 Tsp, but if i’m honest, I don’t really measure. Instead I pour it straight from the bottle into my cup and do two drizzles.

It’s sweet, delicious and utterly Canadian! I made one for Dev last week too, and despite the fact that he’s not usually a fan of my #HealthyBirdy recipes (he says I’m going to kill him…) he liked it! However, he did note how filling it was. Which I thought I should warn any of you that try this recipe for yourself. It’s due to the coconut oil, a healthy fat that makes you feel full faster. Don’t consider that a bad thing though. It’s what makes this hot beverage perfect for an afternoon snack or when curbing sweet tooth cravings. You won’t have any room for anything afterwards.

If you happen to try making your own Healthy Maple Hot Chocolate, let me know what you think!
