I’m not a huge hair person, so when products like the Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo and Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Hair Mask excite me THIS MUCH, it’s obvious I need to share why.
Briogeo Detox + Restore Kit
First, let’s dive in and talk about what they are. I purchased a value set from Sephora called the Detox + Restore Kit, which cost $67 (a lot for a shampoo and conditioner, I know – but comes with two full-sized, award-winning Briogeo products). The Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo (oh yes, it’s a mouthful) is regularly $54, and the Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Hair Mask, is regularly $46. Both tubs are 8oz (aka. huge) and it really is a great value!
Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo
It’s usually around this time of year that my head gets so itchy and dry. The Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-exfoliating Scalp Scrub Shampoo is made to help soothe irritation and prevent flaky scalp (aka. dandruff).
It contains Binchotan Charcoal, which draws out impurities that clog the hair follicle and cause buildup. It also contains coconut oil, which helps moisturize and prevent dryness. The peppermint, spearmint, and tea tree oil complex provide a slight cooling effect to reduce itchiness and make it smell like mint chocolate chip ice cream. The smell is actually SOOOO GOOD!
It’s not meant to be used every day. In fact, it’s a “clinically proven weekly treatment that strengthens damaged hair and helps prevent future damage.” It would be great for anyone that deals with oiliness or product build-up (ie. frequent use of dry shampoo or hairspray).
The gritty texture makes it quite unique. The charcoal gives it a smoky grey colour and makes it look very similar to a face mask.
Don’t Despair, Repair!™ Deep Conditioning Hair Mask
The conditioning hair mask is “clinically proven to boost hair strength, shine, and silkiness and improve the long-term health of damaged hair.” It contains rosehip oil, which contains essential fatty acids to help hydrate and control frizz. Algae extract nourishes, strengthens, and protects the scalp from free-radical damage. B Vitamins improve hair texture, add body, shine, and restore nourishment to hair that can be damaged by heat or chemical treatments.
It has a runny, yogurt-like consistency and smells delightful as well. It can be left on for 10-minutes as a hair mask, but I prefer to use it as a conditioner (because I’m impatient). Some days I’ll massage it in and let it sit while I wash my face or shave my legs.
Now if you know me, you know that I did some serious research before actually deciding to buy the duo. But I was with my cousin at the time, and I must have talked it up quite a bit (ironic considering I had never tried it before) because she decided to get one for herself as well. She had expressed to me that she was looking for something to help with some damage she has from frequent colouring. I thought I would share her initial thoughts:
She tried it before I had the chance to, and I can’t lie…the hair falling out part scared me. But did you know that it’s normal to lose between 50 to 100 hairs a day? Chances are, the follicles have already detached – or are at least broken – and the exfoliating shampoo loosens them away from the scalp. And while it’s absolutely terrifying to lose hair down the drain, it’s actually beneficial to remove the damaged follicles so that new hair growth can occur. We’ve both also noticed less and less hair loss the longer we’ve used the shampoo.
I must also address her comment about the shampoo lathering as well because I have no issues with it. I use a fair size glob and find that rubbing it between my hands before slapping it on my head works best though.
Why I Love Them
Now I know you’re dying to know…why do I love them so much? Well…my hair is THE SOFTEST it has ever been whenever I use this duo. Like a chinchilla’s fur. OK, that’s a strange and exaggerated example…It’s like I’ve just been for a salon blowout. You can catch me petting myself all day long fooooooooor suuuuuuuure.
I love that I can let it air dry and I don’t have anywhere near as much frizz as I normally do. It also feels stronger and thicker. But I have used both products separately and I must admit, they don’t work the same. There’s some kind of Briogeo magic that happens when the two are used in unison, and I’m not complaining…
Now my final point…I like that they come in a recyclable tub! It means I can use up every last trace of the product, and that makes me weirdly happy. But I do have nightmares of dropping (or someone else dropping…ahem, my clumsy boyfriend) the container and spilling the contents.
All in all, I’m a fan and my fingers are tightly crossed that the Detox + Restore Kit sticks around for a while because it truly is such a great value and I would definitely purchase it again!
